Technology overview


The Zano product range consists of three different base products that each deliver distinct UVA performance and transparency levels: Zano® 10, Zano® 20 and Zano® M. Each of these products are available as uncoated powder, surface treated powder and in a range of dispersions under the Xperse brand. Some dispersions combine Zano with TiO2 as well.

The main performance difference for each Zano product is indicated in the table.

When used as single UV filter in a formulation, SPF values well above 30 can be achieved. Zano can be used in combination with TiO2, chemical filters and/or SPF boosters to reach SPF levels of 50+.

Application and uses


The Zano and Xperse products find its application in a variety of products:

 

Sun care: Mineral sunscreen active providing broad-spectrum UV protection, high SPF with targeted UVA and transparency levels

Skin care: Mineral sunscreen active to provide long-lasting broad-spectrum protection and transparency

Color cosmetics: Mineral sunscreen active to provide long-lasting broad-spectrum protection and coverage when needed

Choosing the right product

 

Mineral-only or zinc-oxide only systems:

  • Any of the Zano® grades are suitable, depending on desired UVA and transparency
  • Combining with TiO2: a ratio of 3:1 or 2:1 for Zano®:TiO2 is recommended to achieve sufficient UVA  protection levels

 

Natural formulations:

  • All uncoated Zano® grades and some Xperse products are Ecocert and Cosmos certified

 

Hybrid systems:

  • Zano® 10 & Zano® 10 Plus:
    • Use up to 25%, boost SPF by adding chemical UVB filter
    • Typical ratio Zano/chemical filter to be greater than 1
  • Zano® 20 & Zano® 20 Plus:
    • To be used in hybrid systems with lower levels of chemical UVB filters
    • Lower levels of chemical UVB filter recommended to maintain CWL >370nm
  • Zano® M & Zano® M Plus:
    • Use to boost UVA protection in combination with chemical UVB filters and/or Zano®
    • Level to be chosen based on desired UVA and transparency

Formulation guidelines

 

The following formulation guidelines will help in successfully using the Zano® powder products in formulations:

 

Use of a dedicated dispersing aid:

  • For esters and oils: polyhydroxystearic acid recommended (PHSA)
  • Optimum use level: 4-5 parts per 100 parts Zano® or Zano® Plus
  • Optimum level different for each type of PHSA and Zano® combo
  • Optimum level is when the viscosity of a Zano dispersion reaches it lowest point

Order of addition:

  • Step 1: Start with oil/ester – approx. same amount as Zano used
  • Step 2: Add PHSA and dissolve in oil/ester - do not add any other ingredients at this point
  • Step 3: Add Zano and mix well - mix until dispersion is smooth and no visible lumps present
  • Step 4: Add other oil phase ingredients
  • Step 5: Prepare water phase and complete emulsion

 

Mixing equipment:

  • Any equipment that provides shear will be sufficient
  • Total energy input will determine required mixing time

 

pH:

  • Typical pH range: 6 – 8
  • Use of dedicated dispersing aid and order of addition help control pH drift
