Zano®10 is a specialty zinc oxide that offers excellent broad-band UVA/UVB protection and transparency in personal care and sunscreen formulations. Zano®10 Plus is a surface treated version of Zano®10, coated with triethoxycaprylylsilane. The surface treatment allows for easy incorporation and dispersion in many emollients. Xperse® is Umicore’s range of dispersions of Zano®10 and Zano®10 Plus and consists of dispersions in various emollients.

Formulating Tips

Formulation Guidelines Zano

  • Zano products are in full compliance with all International UVA regulations
  • 1% Zano adds up to ~1.6 SPF units
  • Critical Wavelength:
    • 373nm for Zano 10 and Zano 10 Plus
    • 385nm for Zano M and Zano M Plus
  • With inorganic UV absorbers in-vitro SPF results will not directly correlation with in-vivo results, in-vivo results will provide the accurate SPF measurements
  • Disperse Zano and Zano Plus products preferably in the Oil phase of emulsions
  • Recommend use of 0.75% Polyhydroxystearic Acid as a dispersing agent
  • Zano products are compatible with most emulsifiers, especially non-ionics
  • Zano products are highly compatible with non-ionic thickeners
  • When using Carbomer thickeners it is preferred to use the Zano Plus line of products and the Carbomer should be neutralized prior to ZnO addition

Below are Formulating tips for dispersing Zano (Zano 10, Zano 10 Plus, Zano M, Zano M Plus) in Oils or Esters:

   Procedures

  • The key is to use Polyhydroxystearic Acid (PHSA) at a ratio of 4-5 part to 100 parts Zano
  • Add PHSA to the oil/ester and mix, then Zano after the PHSA is thoroughly mixed with the oil/ester
    • Equipment:        homogenizer (an overhead mixer with a high shear blade can be used if you have enough torque for batch size)
  • Mix until Zano is complete dispersed and the batch is fluid
  Use Level:           1 to 25%
  • 1% by weight of Zano 10 or Zano 10 Plus   =  1.5 to 1.6 SPF Units, a Critical Wave Length of 373 nm (Example: 20% Zano 10 Plus = ~33 SPF & CWL of 373 nm)
  • 1% by weight of Zano M or Zano M Plus    =  1.4 to 1.5 SPF Units, a Critical Wave Length of 385 nm (Example: 20% Zano M Plus = ~31 SPF & CWL of 385 nm)       
  • When working with TiO2 to achieve a SPF 50 and make Broad Spectrum Claim
    • use Zano 10 or Zano 10 Plus at a 3 parts Zano to 1 part TiO2
    • use Zano M and Zano M Plus at a 2 parts Zano to 1 part TiO2
   pH:   
  • Zano 10 or Zano M                                        for best result target 7 -7.5
  • Zano 10 Plus & Zano M Plus                         Less critical
